{{Thread of Words / Flora Commaret}}
_ Flora's project is concerned with text & textile. The word "text" has the same etymological root as the word "textile", from the Latin root "texere", which means "weaving, braiding".
_ In the sixteenth century, embroideries and tapestries, as well as French patterns from the last century, were considered as a writing, resulting from know-how and technical abilities, specific to a female language. Weaving, sewing, are practices that could be considered as language : needle like quill.

_ So both terms can be a field of experimentations of what once unified text and textile. The textile metaphor of the text could be revisited by visual communication and give again a common identity between text and textile.

_ The project, called "Cross Stitch", is a another way of embroiding. Cross Stitch is a embroidery kit for a completely holed table (built for purpose) where everyone can embroider letters, words or sentences of their choice associated with patterns. Like a tablecloth, this kit is a DIY graphic design embroidering, to do, undo and redo.

_ The kit contains 9 different colour threads, 2 needles, a needle cushion, a booklet with fonts, instructions of use and a paper grid for draft designs. A web site was also created to help people to compose letters, words or sentences before embroidering.

_ "Cross Stitch" tries to mix traditional skills and modernity, giving again a real sensitive and sentimental touch to the text like textile. As well as to forget about prejudices that every one has about embroidering, which is "it's an old woman’s hobby".
